Abstract: Radiance as a tool for the creation of digital fine art
Mark Stock (University of Michigan, USA)

Computer rendering tools have traditionally allowed an artist infinte creative space for image generation, and as such, computer-generated artwork has been of subjects which do not require any grounding in physical reality. While this is surely a benefit of working in the digital realm, it also allows creation of images that, by lack of familiarity and expected visual cues, can alienate a viewer. Radiance's lighting algorithm returns these cues to an image, allowing a stronger and more visceral connection between the viewer and the image, while still allowing an artist the creative space of a sculptor and photographer. In this talk I will present techniques that have been developed over the past five years of using Radiance to make digital art.
