Following up on Rob's answer, there's a photon mapping manual in  
ray/doc/pmap-manual.pdf to get you started. Forward raytracing is done  
with the mkpmap utility as a prerequisite to using the usual  
rpict/tracte/rvu, supplying the photon map file with the -ap option.
