I believe pfilt can also take in a partial image.

I've found that "ra_ppm file.pic > file.pnm" gives me an image 
with black in the unfinished portions. Trying to add pnmtopng as 
a pipe just returns a 0-length file, but using a two-step method 
with ppm as an intermediary works.
