A discussion from last year included an example of a simple  
shell-script to hide the intermediate stage of the conversion from 3ds  
to rad:

If needed, you could add:

objview mat$nam.rad  $nam.rad

at the end of the script to start objview on each newly converted model  
to give a quick visual check.
