[Radiance-general] vwrays/rtrace v5.2a error: rtrace: internal - could not empty queue in ray_fifo_flush()

Hi John,

This may be a bug I introduced when trying to avoid a out-of-memory error Jan Wienold was seeing. There was a period of 5 or 6 days end of April / beginning of May where builds would have included this bug. I don't remember exactly what error it generated, but give the latest build a try. I'm hoping this is the same problem I fixed on May 2nd. (And it was running rtpict that generated it, so there you go!)

I think the rtpict script does exactly what you are doing, and even supports the -z option if you ever need that.

Cheers,
-Greg

The following vwrays command to generate a picture using the rtrace -n option works fine in v5.1a (and quite a few versions earlier I expect), but bombs out in 5.2a with the error message "rtrace: internal - could not empty queue in ray_fifo_flush()". Here's the command:
>
> vwrays -ff -vf $vf -x $xdim -y $ydim | rtrace `vwrays -d -vf "$vf" -x "$xdim" -y "$ydim"` -ffc -i -n $ncpu -w -af amb.af $paramb scene.oct > out.hdr
>
> $paramb is just the usual bunch of ambient parameters, with a couple of direct ones also: -ad 4096 -ab 5 -ar 512 -as 512 -aa 0.15 -av 0 0 0 -dr 2 -dc 1
>
> The command chunders away for a while soaking the CPUs and generating a sizeable (a few Mb) ambient file before giving up the ghost, leaving the output containing nothing more than a header.
>
> Such hacks may now be obsolete given the emergence of the rtpict script (which I haven't yet tried). Though the rtpict script looks like it is doing something very similar.
