[Radiance-general] Use of Radiance in the infrared

Richard,

I would say you can. I often use Radiance for assessing the solar
properties of shading systems.

However, you will have to consider that (I am speaking in VERY general,
some of these might not apply):

- Radiance uses only geometric optics. I have no idea what happens to
diffraction when wavelengths get longer... but that effect will not be
considered.
- Some materials will be opaque in some wavelengths and transparent in
others (i.e. glass), so the material properties might change a lot.
- If you get to very long wavelengths, some hot surfaces might even
become emitters. I guess that in order to get to this you will need VERY
hot surfaces; so for albedo it might not apply.
- At least in my cases, I assume the materials to be gray (i.e. have the
same optical properties for the whole range). This might not apply for VERY
long spectrums. To solve this, you might want to split into some more bands
than only IR and Visible. As a start, you can use the basic three channels
for three different bands.
- Will you need to change the sky and sun's definition, wouldn't you?

I hope it helps!
