Hi Chris!

Typical light pipes are made of highly specular surfaces, thus the  
ambient bounces is not the most critical. The questions are

- rectangular or round section
- only specular or specular plus diffuse
- sunny or overcast / cloudy sky

Have a look at the photon map if you need a very general approach.
