Hi Jack,

anim8or is a free modelling software that can import/export 3ds and obj 
files.
You can download it from here www.anim8or.com

. but I think (I am not sure) sometimes it mess up model's normals.

but give it a try.
It does not need any installation, it is just an executable file.
