file.hlp 2.1 10/27/94 This help file is associated with the getfile.tcl routines, which produce a screen for browsing and naming files. .Directory.Intro The current directory may be set either by choosing a new directory by double-clicking on a directory in the file window, or by explicitly changing the directory named in the entry window. A directory may be given absolutely, relative to the current path, or relative to your home directory or that of another user using the tilde (~) shorthand. Hitting in the directory entry window has the same effect as pressing the "List" button. That is, the interface changes to that directory and lists all files matching the given pattern(s). If an attempt is made to change to a non-existent or read-protected directory, an error message is printed in red and the interface returns to the previously selected directory. .Directory.Match One or more matching (i.e. globbing) patterns may be given in this window, separated by white spaces. Nothing or a single asterisk (*) matches all files in this directory. Whatever the selected pattern, directories will always be listed, followed by a slash (/). This makes changing directories more convenient. To list files beginning with a period (.), use the ".*" pattern. Thus, it is possible to include all files in the directory listing by entering ".* *" in the pattern window. Hitting in the pattern entry window has the same effect as pressing the "List" button. .Directory.List The "List" button causes the interface to change to the selected directory and list all files there matching the given pattern(s). The same effect may be achieved by hitting in either the directory entry or pattern entry window. .File.Intro The file list box shows all files in the given directory matching the specified pattern(s). In addition, all subdirectories and the parent directory are listed unconditionally. Double-clicking on a directory in the file list box is the most convenient method of filesystem navigation. Clicking on a file selects it for editing, but does not enter it. Double-click on a file if you wish to enter it. .File.Entry The file entry field allows you to enter the name of a file that may or may not exist in the current directory. Hitting in this field is equivalent to pressing the "OK" button (if it exists). .File.View The "View" button, if it exists, permits you to edit the highlighted file from the directory listing, using either xedit or the editor indicated by the EDITOR environment variable, if defined.
